Q: Mark, tell us a bit more about yourself
ML: Hi, I’m Mark and I have many years of experience in the travel industry working for various tour operators and airlines. After moving to Cornwall with my family in 2012, I started the Kernow Travel Company. The company focuses on locals in Cornwall starting their holidays from our local airport in Newquay as well as attracting inbound holidaymakers into the County. I am passionate about Cornwall, the local economy and doing my small part to help it grow.
Q: So, why Pass the Keys?
ML: To be honest, it was something that had been on my radar for a couple of years but it wasn’t something I truly realised the potential of until I investigated it properly. I love the investment that Pass the Keys has made in technology to enable a really smooth guest and host experience as well as the cutting edge algorithms they use, which enable us to generate more income for our hosts than them simply trusting the Airbnb pricing or that offered by other management companies.
After a handful of Covid-induced Zoom meetings, it was clear to me that their company ethos of true partnership coupled with their product offering made it a bit of a no-brainer.
Everyone knows how amazing Cornwall is as a destination (4 million visitors a year can’t be wrong). I want to provide an exceptional and unique service to benefit all those people who have invested in the County and having a business that sits naturally alongside the inbound side of my travel company makes perfect sense to me. I plan on using this natural synergy to the benefit of our hosts.
Q: What advice would you give to someone thinking of buying a property to use for holiday letting?
ML: Remember that the property is both an investment and a business to generate income. Whilst it is your home, don’t get too emotionally involved in its decorating and furnishing. Your property needs to show well, and your tastes may not be other people’s!
Also, instead of location, location, location; think photos, photos, photos. The more professional photos you have of your property on your listings the more potential guests will be attracted to it.
